The timing was uncanny; no sooner had we identified the need to be prepared for possible oil spills endangering our dwindling penguin colonies, than there was a spill in Algoa Bay, Port Elizabeth.
Thanks to the generous response of nature lovers like you, we were able to rescue 30 oiled penguins and four chicks whose parents were debilitated by the oil.

Two penguins injured by fishing line and a Giant Petrel that died after swallowing a plastic bottle top (pictured), are three recent cases that highlight the increasing dangers of pollution in our oceans.
One of the penguins was admitted with fishing line wrapped so tightly around its leg that the soft tissue was damaged almost down to the bone. Fortunately the bird still had sensation in his foot, so we operated and he is now able to walk with a limp.
