At a glance

SANCCOB is an internationally recognized seabird conservation and rehabilitation institution. As the Southern African authority, we are called to act in situations involving oiled, injured, abandoned and ill seabirds.

We are recognized, affiliated, internationally linked and supported by numerous organizations and partners in conservation and are involved in a diverse number of working groups.

SANCCOB has been singled out for the work we do 365 days a year to save seabirds, develop skills capacity in our sector and to educate people to respect the ocean and marine life. Some of the many awards that recognise our work is the PAAZAB Conservation award, IFAW Animal Action Award for Animal Rehabilitator of the year as well as the Loerie Gold Award for newspaper advertising.

Accreditation

Registered with the South African Vetenirary Council

Consultation

As the leading authority in seabird rehabilitation, SANCCOB is regularly consulted by both local and international organizations such as BirdLife South Africa´s Albatross Task Force, Two Oceans Aquarium, The National Zoological Gardens of South Africa and many other wildlife rehabilitation centres.

Matters of consultation may be once-off or ongoing and may include general health related, husbandry related or centre or enclosure design advice.

Training

Our methods to treat birds are used globally and we continue to train conservation officers from CapeNature, SANParks, Robben Island Museum and The City of Cape Town as well as employees of other rehabilitation centres, zoos and aquariums (local and international). In the past 5 years we are proud to say that we have trained over 100 conservation officers and captive animal management institution staff.

We have also trained over 50 local and international students in the past 5 years.
